Nvidia's CEO Pascal Neumann Resigns
Nvidia’s new CEO has resigned and will be replaced by longtime CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. The company’s stock jumped more than 4% in after-hours trading following the news.
“After 32 years with Nvidia, today Jen-Hsun takes the next step in his life,” said Jen-Hsun Huang in a statement. “I feel an immense amount of responsibility and gratitude to the passionate gamers, developers and partners who have made me proud to be a member of the Nvidia team. This is a wonderful time to be at the company, and I look forward to watching this world-class team continue to make amazing technology.”
Nvidia will remain a public company, and its current CEO Pete Kovacs will stay in that position. He’ll also be replaced by Jen-Hsun Huang. Huang, who is 64, has been with Nvidia since 1985 and is its current CEO.
Huang is credited with creating the GeForce graphics cards for many PCs and was also chief architect of Tesla, the company’s car-oriented computers. He also launched CUDA, a software framework that allowed programmers to offload data processing into the GPU. Nvidia’s current leadership will give Huang a chance to rebuild that framework, and there’s plenty of data to be offloaded. GPUs represent a huge chunk of the data-processing market, and Google is one of Nvidia’s biggest customers.
“Under Pete Kovacs’ leadership, Nvidia has transformed from a maker of specialty graphics chips to an amazing computing platform company that is deeply integrated into the world of computer hardware, game development, and cloud computing,” said CEO Jen-Hsun Huang in a statement. “Pete’s leadership has put Nvidia firmly on track for long-term growth and as I take over as CEO, I am ready to take the next steps.”
Nvidia is best known for its graphics-processing chips, but it also makes chips that allow desktop computers to communicate with the cloud and server computers.
